Toshio Suzuki is a Senior Researcher of Institute of Natural Sciences Professor Emeritus at Nihon University in Tokyo. Prof. Suzuki grew up in Tokyo and received his B. Sc. in Physics in 1974 and his D. Sc. in Physics in 1979 both from the University of Tokyo. He carried out postdoctoral research in nuclear physics as a JSPS fellow at the University of Tokyo and moved to Nihon University in 1980. He was promoted to Associated Professor in 1995 and Professor of Physics in 2001 at Nihon University. Prof. Suzuki was also a visiting professor at Center for Nuclear Study, the University of Tokyo during 2007-2011, and a visiting researcher at National Astronomical Observatory of Japan during 2010-2021.
Prof. Suzuki studied spin and magnetic properties of nuclei by shell model as well as with core polarization and two-body meson-exchange current effects. His interest focused on unstable nuclei and study of change of magic numbers in neutron-rich nuclei in 1990’s. During 2005-2010, he and his collaborators succeeded in understanding such shell evolutions toward driplines from microscopic nuclear interactions including tensor and three-nucleon forces. On the other hand, since 2006, he extended his work to nuclear astrophysics: accurate evaluations of neutrino-nucleus reaction cross sections, e-capture and beta-decay rates in stellar environments were carried out and applied to nucleosynthesis and nuclear Urca processes in stars as well as neutrino detection with considerable successes. He has expertise in evaluations of the weak rates induced by both Gamow-Teller and forbidden transitions.
